At Byers Green we wish to promote a love of reading.
Every week we run a book club on a Friday afternoon, starting on 27th September
The children can choose a book they would love to read and reserve it. We are encouraging a weekly savings card where the children can bring some money per week to save up for their book. By doing this, it will help to develop an understanding of saving money and help to promote a sense of delayed gratification. Once your child has saved enough money, they can bring their book home and choose a new one to start saving for. Alternatively, if you wish for them to buy a book in full, this is no problem. Books tend to cost approximately £2 or £3.
In school, the children receive house point tickets for many positive reasons such as helping others or showing a fantastic attitude to learning. During praise assembly on a Friday, one house point ticket will be chosen out of each class’s golden box. The lucky winner will receive a £1 voucher for book club.
Any money raised from book club goes back towards purchasing new books.
Research from Oxford University Press shows that:
Reading for pleasure opens up new worlds for children. It gives them the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters.
Reading for pleasure also improves children’s well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others. Research shows that reading for pleasure can be directly linked to children’s success throughout their time at school and even into adulthood.
