Welcome
Miss Morgan – Class Teacher
Termly Overview:
Little Wandle Phonics
The children will begin their reading journey by following our scheme Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. In our Little Wandle lessons, we will begin to learn the letter sounds. We will look at hearing the first sound we say in a word and learn how to blend the sounds to say a word.
Little Wandle for Reception Parents
Early Writing
The class will have lots of fun mark making. They will paint pictures of themselves and their friends. They will make patterns and draw secret symbols. They will also learn how to write their name.
Maths in Class 1
In our number lessons we will start to use your noticing skills. We will explore different amounts and use our subitising skills to say how many you can see without counting. The children will find out about patterns and have lots of fun making their own patterns using lots of different things.
Reading in Class 1
The children are at the beginning of their reading journey which is an exciting time with lots of new things to learn. At first the children will bring home a sound box and a sound book including the letter sounds we have learned that week. Please can you use the sound box flashcards to practise saying the sounds and the sound book is for the children to practise writing them.
Homework
Please see information about homework over the coming terms here:
Sharing book
In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen from our school library for you to enjoy together.
Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!

Reception Baseline Assessment
During the Autumn term the children will complete their Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). This is a practical activity that will be used to assess the children’s early skills at the start of the school year. The information leaflet you received this week will explain this in more detail.
Tapestry Online Learning Journal
We use Tapestry to record photos, observations and comments to build up a record of your child’s experiences during their time with us.
We do ask that you check your Tapestry account regularly as we add information here, tasks to support learning at home as well as updates on your child’s progress.
We continue to operate an open-door policy so please ask if you need any further information or support.
