Welcome
Mrs Mowbray – Class Teacher
Miss Jackson – Teaching Assistant
We have lots of exciting things in store and I am really looking forward to teaching your little ones! Please read the information below to find out everything you need to know about Class 3!
Termly Overview:
Reading in Class 3
Reading is the key to success across all subjects in the curriculum. Choosing a book you’re interested in is an excellent start. We are so lucky to have a woodland reading area in our classroom with a range of exciting books to choose from.
Reading books will continue to be given out every Friday from our leveled scheme (more information can be seen in the homework section on our class page). If you have finished the scheme, you may choose a book of your own for pleasure to take home or if you prefer you may bring one from home to read. Either way, just remember the more you read, the more your imagination develops and this can really help you with your English work in school!
Spelling in Class 3
Each week, you will learn a new set of spellings. You will learn the rules that help us become independent spellers and you will practise the spelling rules at school and at home as part of homework. It is important to apply your spellings in your written work at school so you can consolidate your understanding of them in context. All spelling rules are from the Year 3 and 4 English curriculum or from the Year 3 and 4 statutory words list. It is your responsibility to learn your spellings ready for you weekly spelling test which will take place on a Friday.
Maths in Class 3
During the week, you will complete fluency lessons covering the skills you need to solve problems later in the week. We will learn different strategies to help us decide which method is best to solve the tasks and challenges set.
Every Friday we will have a focus on problem solving linked to the skills learnt during the week. Problem solving may also recap previous learning to help remind you of the knowledge you have already gained from previous lessons.
It is your job to practice times tables, division facts and number bonds at home so you understand the basics and are ready for our pacey curriculum!
Homework
There are two elements to your homework – the core tasks (which must be completed) and the optional tasks (which will be related to your theme).
Core Tasks
- Spellings
Here you will find a link to your weekly spelling tests. You must take the time to learn your words for your weekly spelling test.
In Class 3, your spelling test will be on a FRIDAY.
Please ask Mrs Mowbray if you would like a paper copy of your words.
- Reading
You are expected to read each week (approximately 10 minutes per day). In Class 3, this can be independent reading but it is always beneficial to read out loud! Ask someone in your house if you can read to them at least once per week.
You should always have a school reading book that you can read at home but you can also read a book from home if it is something that you want to read for pleasure.
Below is a link to recommended reading lists for years 3 and 4.

- Maths
Each week you are expected to practice your multiplication tables using TTRockstars. This can be through a challenge set by your teacher or can be an independent goal that you set yourself.
If you require further tables challenges or printable tables tasks, please ask your class teacher.
Optional Tasks
In addition to your core tasks, I have also set some optional tasks that relate to your topic or theme. These are cross curricular and have no set deadline. You can complete as many of the tasks as you wish and return them to school as and when you finish them.
Class 3 Optional Homework Autumn Term
Year 4 Multiplication Check
The Multiplication Time Table Check (MTC) is a statutory test for all Year 4 pupils in England. The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can fluently recall their times tables up to 12.
Pupils are tested on their ability to answer 25 multiplication questions online. They have six seconds to answer each question and schools are given a two-week window to ‘check’ all eligible children in the year group.
This year, the MTC will be taken by all eligible Year 4 pupils within a 2-week period from Monday 2nd June 2025.
