Mathematics at Byers Green
At Byers Green we understand that Mathematics is important for being successful in everyday life and for understanding and engaging with the world around us. Our aim is to help develop each child’s natural ability to think logically, solve puzzles and be able to apply their skills to different kinds of challenges and real-life problems.
Our curriculum has been carefully designed to allow all of our pupils to think creatively, and make links between key mathematical concepts as they explore patterns in the number systems, learn effective methods for calculation, identify the distinctive properties of shapes, understand and use a wide range of measures and be confident when collecting and interpreting statistical information. Units have been carefully structured to allow topics or areas to be revisited and core knowledge to be built upon allowing key learning to be reinforced and underpinned as new information and concepts are added. We have ensured there is logical progression and, by adopting elements of the mastery approach, we are confident that all children have a good grasp of the taught unit before moving on. We have also identified the core knowledge that children need to have at each stage of their mathematical journey to ensure success as they transition into the next phase.
Throughout all year groups, children will be taught the knowledge and understanding that they need to explain their reasoning and justify their answers in context. Through a mixture of collaborative and independent work we hope that they will develop the resilience and confidence that they need to achieve success in the subject.
In order to promote the teaching and enthusiasm for Mathematics, we understand that it should not be confined to Maths lessons. By developing cross-curricular links, we know that we can develop mathematical knowledge further in key areas such as calculation, data handling, measure and money.
