Curriculum – Science

Science at Byers Green

At Byers Green Primary School our intent for our Science curriculum is to instill curiosity in all children. We aim to have scientific enquiry at the heart of our curriculum to equip children with the skills needed to answer questions about the world around them. Filled with awe and wonder, we hope as they step out into the wider world that they have the confidence to ask and answer their own questions.

Our Science curriculum is based on ‘Big Questions’ that can be explored using a range of scientific enquiry: Observation over time, Pattern Seeking, Identifying and Classifying, Comparative and fair testing and research. The set of skills learnt through working scientifically are built upon each year. All knowledge aspects of the curriculum are taught throughout the school in a progression building on children’s prior knowledge taught in previous years or Key Stage.

Science lessons are taught discreetly each week to allow focus on the true Science. We continue to have high expectations and expose them to new scientific vocabulary in their Science lessons. We are developing our relationships with outside agencies to help enrich science in our school to allow children to have a wealth of experience.

Our long term plans ensure all aspects of the National Curriculum are covered for each year group over a two year cycle. In Summer 2 of each year, children have the opportunity to learn about a particular Scientist or inventor to gain an understanding of how they have contributed to the world around them.

When children leave Byers Green Primary to attend secondary school, we would like them to be able to:

  • Have developed an enthusiasm and enjoyment of scientific learning and discovery.
  • We want our children to have developed their thinking and questioning skills
  • We would like our children to become increasingly independent thinkers

and questioners, and not be afraid to ask ‘why?’

  • We want our children to have scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • We would like our children to leave with a developed understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • We want children to leave fully equipped with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
