We will be having a non-uniform day on Friday 15th November for Children in Need. Please could children bring a donation – we suggest £1, but any amount would be greatly appreciated. All coins will be placed on Pudsey Bear and we will see how much Team Byers Green can raise to support this super cause.

Dear Parents/ Carers
Nasal and Intramuscular Flu Vaccination Consent Form
Your child’s flu vaccination is now due and the school session is booked for 5 November 2024.
This vaccination is recommended to help protect your child against flu. Flu can be an unpleasant illness and can cause serious complications. Vaccinating your child will also help protect more vulnerable family and friends by preventing the spread of flu.
Please complete the electronic consent form using the link below before 29 October 2024. (one for each child) to ensure your child receives their vaccination.
https://nhsImms.azurewebsites.net/session/18873b43
Once your child has received their flu vaccination, you will receive an email with our contact details and possible side effects listed.
‘The nasal spray is the preferred flu vaccine for children. It is quick, painless, easy to administer and may be better at reducing the spread of flu to others than an injected vaccine. There will be a small number of children in the school not able to have the nasal vaccine because of pre-existing medical conditions or treatments. They will be offered an injected vaccine. The injected vaccine is also available for children whose parents don’t want them to have the nasal spray because of the very small amount of porcine gelatine (used as a stabiliser)’ (NHS 2024).
If you have any queries, please contact the school age immunisation service on 0333 358 3397.
If your child has already had the Flu vaccine since September 2024 please complete a refusal form.
If you have any problems accessing the link, please telephone 0333 358 3397.
Kind Regards,
Immunisation Team

At Byers Green we wish to promote a love of reading.
Every week we run a book club on a Friday afternoon, starting on 27th September
The children can choose a book they would love to read and reserve it. We are encouraging a weekly savings card where the children can bring some money per week to save up for their book. By doing this, it will help to develop an understanding of saving money and help to promote a sense of delayed gratification. Once your child has saved enough money, they can bring their book home and choose a new one to start saving for. Alternatively, if you wish for them to buy a book in full, this is no problem. Books tend to cost approximately £2 or £3.
In school, the children receive house point tickets for many positive reasons such as helping others or showing a fantastic attitude to learning. During praise assembly on a Friday, one house point ticket will be chosen out of each class’s golden box. The lucky winner will receive a £1 voucher for book club.
Any money raised from book club goes back towards purchasing new books.
Research from Oxford University Press shows that:
Reading for pleasure opens up new worlds for children. It gives them the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters.
Reading for pleasure also improves children’s well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others. Research shows that reading for pleasure can be directly linked to children’s success throughout their time at school and even into adulthood.

Our Colour Run is on Friday 7th June at the School Field. The children will practise before-hand and then parents are invited to join in with their children as follows:
Class 4 (+ parents) will run at 2:05
Class 3 (+ parents) will run at 2:20
Class 1 and 2 (+ parents) will run at 2:35
Please can children come to school on Friday in the kit they wish to take part in. The organisers re-iterated the need for old clothes and how effective it looks in a plain white t-shirt. If you have any old plain white t-shirts you could donate, we would really appreciate it. If you need a plain t-shirt, please get in touch with Mrs Blenkiron.
You are welcome to take your child(ren) home at the end of the event (approximately 2:55) and we will dismiss them from the top field. At the end of the event, we will sit the children in their class areas and school staff must hand the children over to their adult. If you are unable to attend, children will be taken back to school and dismissed at the end of the school day at 3:15 as usual.
Parents are invited to bring camping chairs and picnic blankets along to sit at the side to watch.
We are making this a sponsored event to raise money for the Team Solan Connor Fawcett Cancer Trust. Mark Solan will be joining us during the course of the afternoon and following this up with an assembly to tell the children about their work.
Please can all children bring a water bottle. In case of sunny weather, can children bring sun cream to school or put a long-lasting cream on in the morning.
If the weather forecast is poor, we will let you know on the morning if the event will be cancelled.
Any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch,
Kind regards,
Miss Dodds

Dear Parents,
Some families have approached me asking about after school wrap around care. I have looked into this and have a meeting next week with the relevant people from the County Council. With enough uptake, this may be viable. I put a consultation letter out earlier in the week. If you did not receive it, please ask. I really want to do all I can to support our families so appreciate your feedback and thoughts to help make this work in our school.
Please could you return your letters by Monday 29th January so I can start to get an indication of numbers.
Kind regards,
Miss Dodds

As the winter draws in and illness is on the rise, it is difficult to know what to do for the best sometimes with regards to attendance. Please find below, a link to the NHS website which gives you an overview of common childhood illness with guidance around school absence.
